VW ID.R sets record at 7: 38,585 in Heaven’s Gate Run: Only a few weeks ago we learned how VW uses its all-electric ID.R on the Big Gate Road of the Tianmen Mountains and its 99 Spitzkehrecken. Well, now the results are up and the time is 7 minutes and 38.585 seconds.
Behind the wheel sat Romain Dumas, who led the ID.R expertly over the 11-km-long road to the Himmelstor – a high arc in the cliffs. The ID.R also holds records on Pikes Peak, Goodwood and the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
“A new record on a really spectacular road – Volkswagen and the ID.R have once again demonstrated what the electromobility of the future can do today,” said VW COO Ralf Brandstätter. “Not only has it proven that electric cars like the ID.R can break established records and set new standards, but the ID.R also shows how emotional and exciting the mobility of the future is.”
Since there was no official time for racing cars on this road before the ID.R’s attempt, he was able to get straight into the record books. To cope with the 10.906 km long route, which rises about 1,100 meters above sea level, the racer had to dismantle his forces with great care.

“I’m sure I’ll remember this record run on Tianmen Mountain forever as my most spectacular outing. I’m proud to set a record with the electric Volkswagen ID.R in China, “said Dumas after his run. “The few information and tests we had before made it a big challenge. The road is incredibly narrow and winding, but the electric power ride on the ID.R was incredibly fun. The enormous torque was a big advantage on the short straights, while the aerodynamics offered extra traction in the fast sections. ”
The Volkswagen ID.R currently serves as the “race ambassador” of the future ID. Product family and is powered by electric motors with combined 680 hp (670 hp).
